Expert Guide: Installing Batt Insulation (USA)

Understanding R-Value

The “R” stands for resistance to heat flow. Higher R-values mean better insulating power. For US climates, the Department of Energy recommends R-13 to R-15 for walls and R-30 to R-60 for attics.

Measuring for Accuracy

Always measure between studs to ensure your batts fit snugly. For standard framing, 16″ OC (On-Center) uses 15″ wide batts, and 24″ OC uses 23″ wide batts.

Vapor Barriers (Faced vs Unfaced)

In humid climates, use faced insulation (kraft paper) towards the warm side (interior in winter). In dry climates or for remodeling, unfaced with a separate plastic vapor barrier is often used.
