Expert Guide: How to Measure for Bamboo Flooring
Installing bamboo flooring requires precision. As a durable and eco-friendly option popular in the USA, bamboo is often sold in engineered or solid planks. To ensure you buy enough material without over-spending, follow these expert tips:
Why Calculate Waste Factor?
Never buy exactly the square footage of your room. You will need cuts for edges, doorways, and potential mistakes during installation. Standard waste is 10%. However, if you are installing diagonally, the waste increases to 15-20% due to angled cuts.
Bamboo Flooring Types
- Solid Bamboo: Made entirely of bamboo. Can be refinished multiple times. Sensitive to humidity changes.
- Engineered Bamboo: A bamboo veneer over a plywood core. More stable than solid, better for basements or areas with fluctuating temperatures.
- Strand Woven Bamboo: The hardest and most durable type, compressed under high heat. Ideal for high-traffic US homes.
Measurement Tips
Always measure the widest and longest points of the room, including into doorways. If your room is not a perfect rectangle, divide it into smaller rectangles, calculate each, and add them together using the “Total Sq. Ft.” mode in this calculator.
