Expert Guide: Building Your Gabion Wall

🪨 Choosing the Right Stone

For stability, stones should be 1.5x to 2x the mesh hole size. Typical Gabion mesh is 3″x3″, so aim for stones between 4″ and 8″. Angular stones lock together better than round river rocks, creating a more stable structure.

📏 Standard US Basket Sizes

In the USA, standard gabion baskets are typically 3ft wide in height and depth (e.g., 3x3x3 ft or 3×1.5×3 ft). Custom sizes are available but cost more. This calculator defaults to common industry standards.

🛡️ Geotextile Fabric

Always install a heavy-duty non-woven geotextile behind and under the wall. This prevents soil from washing out through the rocks (piping) and keeps the foundation clean.

⚖️ Foundation Requirements

Gabion walls are flexible and heavy. They do not require a concrete footing, but the ground must be leveled and compacted. A 4″ to 6″ crushed stone base is recommended for drainage.
