Installing a gravel driveway is a cost-effective and durable solution for US properties. To ensure longevity and proper drainage, calculating the correct amount of material is critical. Our Gravel Driveway Calculator (USA) uses standard density formulas to account for compaction and waste.
How is Gravel Calculated?
The calculator determines the volume in cubic feet using the formula for your selected shape (Length × Width × Depth). Since gravel in the USA is sold by the ton or cubic yard, we convert cubic feet to cubic yards (dividing by 27) and then to tons using the specific material density.
- Rectangle: Length × Width
- Circle: π × (Diameter / 2)²
- Triangle: 0.5 × Base × Height
Recommended Depth for Driveways
For a standard residential driveway supporting regular vehicles, we recommend a depth of 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone. If you are parking heavy trucks or RVs, consider increasing the depth to 8-12 inches or using a layered base (Large stone base followed by finer gravel).
Material Selection (USA Standards)
Choosing the right rock affects the calculator’s density:
- Crushed Stone #57: The standard for driveways. Angular edges lock together for stability.
- Pea Gravel: Smooth, rounded stones. aesthetically pleasing but can shift under tires; best for top layers or walkways.
- Quarry Process (DGA):strong> A mix of stone dust and crushed stone. Compacts hard to create a semi-solid surface.
