How to Measure Gutters for Your USA Home
Accurate measurement is the first step in a successful gutter installation. To calculate the total linear feet, measure each straight run of your roof’s edge where you want gutters installed.
- Length (Eave): The horizontal edge of the roof. This is your main gutter run.
- Width (Rake): The distance from the gutter edge up to the roof peak (ridge). This helps us determine the “Roof Pitch Factor” for drainage calculations.
Understanding Gutter Sizes: 5-inch vs 6-inch
Most residential homes in the USA use standard 5-inch K-style gutters. However, if your roof is large, steep, or you live in a heavy rain area (like Florida or the Pacific Northwest), 6-inch gutters may be necessary to prevent overflow.
This calculator automatically factors in your roof pitch and square footage to recommend the optimal size, ensuring you don’t overpay for materials you don’t need, or underestimate and risk water damage.
Why Add 10% Waste?
Professional contractors always add a 10% waste factor. This accounts for cutting errors, corner miters, and overlapping seams. Our calculator includes this automatically so your final material quote is accurate.
