How to Calculate Shed Roof Area
Calculating the roof area for a shed is different from a flat roof because you must account for the slope (pitch). Our Shed Roof Area Calculator Pro (USA) simplifies this by using the standard American “Pitch” method (rise over run).
The Formula:
Area = Rafter Length × Roof Length
To find the Rafter Length, we use the Pythagorean theorem based on your pitch and width:
Rafter Length = √(Run² + Rise²)
Why Use a Waste Factor?
When ordering shingles, metal roofing, or plywood, you cannot buy exactly 100.5 sq ft. You must buy full bundles or sheets. Furthermore, cuts for hips, valleys, and edges result in scrap material.
- Simple Roofs: Add 5-10% waste.
- Complex Roofs (Hips/Vallies): Add 15-20% waste.
This tool automatically calculates the total material needed including this percentage so you don’t run short during your project.
