How to Use This Silt Fence Calculator (USA)
This tool is designed specifically for United States contractors and site supervisors utilizing standard imperial measurements (Feet and Inches). To achieve the most accurate estimate for your erosion control plan:
- Measure Perimeter: Walk the designated boundary where sediment control is required. Enter the total linear feet.
- Select Fabric: Choose “Standard” for most residential or low-slope sites. Select “Heavy Duty” if the site involves heavy runoff or steep slopes.
- Post Spacing: While 8 feet is acceptable on flat ground, 6-foot spacing is recommended by most USA state EPAs for durability.
Industry Standards & Compliance
Our calculations assume compliance with AASHTO M288 specifications. Silt fences must be installed with the fabric buried at least 6 inches into the ground to prevent undercutting. This calculator includes a standard 10% waste factor to account for overlaps and splices.
Material Breakdown Explanation
Fabric: Usually purchased in 100-foot rolls. We calculate rolls + 1 extra for safety on large jobs.
Stakes: Hardwood or Oak stakes are typical. The count is derived by dividing length by spacing and adding corner posts.
Wire Backing: Essential if using a machine slicer (plow) for installation.
