How to Measure Your Stairs for Carpet

Measure flat

Tread Depth

Place tape measure at the nosing edge, measure straight back to where the tread meets the riser. Measure the flat surface only, not the overhang.

Top to bottom

Riser Height

Measure the vertical distance from the top of one tread to the top of the next tread. This is the height of the vertical board (riser) between steps.

Side to side

Stair Width

Measure across the stair from wall to wall (or railing to wall) at the widest point. For open stairs, measure the full tread width including any overhang.

1 in Overhang part

Nosing Overhang

Measure how far the tread edge extends past the riser below it. Look from the side — it’s the protruding lip at the front of each step.

Frequently Asked Questions

For 13 standard straight stairs (36″ wide, 10″ tread, 7.5″ riser, 1″ nosing), you need approximately 47 sq ft or 5.2 sq yards before waste. With 10% waste factor, that’s about 5.8 sq yards. Total material cost at mid-grade pricing ($5.50/sq yd carpet + $2/sq yd padding) would be roughly $43 for materials, plus $65 for installation ($5/step) — totaling around $108 before tax.
Use a steel tape measure for accuracy. 1) Count all steps from bottom to top including the top landing step. 2) Measure tread depth from nosing edge straight back. 3) Measure riser height vertically from tread top to next tread top. 4) Measure stair width at the widest point. 5) Measure nosing overhang. Pro tip: Measure 3-4 steps and average them — most stairs have slight variations. Use our calculator above with your measurements for instant results.
Per the International Residential Code (IRC) 2021 Section R311.7.1, the minimum stairway width for residential buildings is 36 inches measured above the handrail height (and below the required headroom). Most US homes have stairs between 36-42 inches wide. Grand staircases may be 48-60 inches. Condos and townhomes often use the 36″ minimum.
In 2025, carpeting a standard 13-step straight staircase in the USA costs $150 to $500 for mid-grade materials including installation. Budget options start around $120. Premium installations range $420-$900. Luxury wool carpet can exceed $1,200. Stair carpet installation costs more per square foot than flat areas because of the labor-intensive wrapping around nosings, securing to tacks strips on both tread and riser, and precise cutting required.
Waste factors for stair carpet: 10% for straight stairs (minimal cutting), 15% for L-shaped or U-shaped stairs (landing cuts and seam placement), 20% for curved or spiral stairs (complex angles and significant waste from triangular cuts). Our calculator auto-adjusts the waste recommendation when you select your stair type. Never go below 10% — even professional installers need extra for pattern matching and the wrap-around at each nosing.
Yes, padding (underlay) is strongly recommended for stairs. It provides comfort, noise reduction, insulation, and extends carpet life. For stairs, use firm, high-density padding rated 8 lb or higher (not the plush padding used for bedrooms). Stair padding should be no more than 7/16 inch thick — thicker padding causes wrinkling and creates a tripping hazard on steps. Expect to pay $1-$3 per sq yard for quality stair padding. Some manufacturers offer stair-specific padding with built-in scrim for extra stability.

Pro Tips from Flooring Experts

01
Buy carpet from a full roll width. Carpet comes in 12-foot and 15-foot widths. For a 36-inch stair, you’ll get 3 or 4 strips per roll width, minimizing seams and waste. Calculate how many full-width strips you need.
02
Choose cut-pile or frieze carpet for stairs. These styles hide foot traffic patterns well and resist crushing. Avoid berber on stairs — the loops can catch and unravel, especially at nosing edges.
03
Get at least 3 installation quotes. Stair installation pricing varies significantly. Some installers charge per step, others per square yard. Make sure quotes include carpet, padding, tack strip, installation, and cleanup.
04
Consider stair runners as an alternative. A 27-inch runner on 36-inch stairs exposes beautiful hardwood on the sides while providing the comfort and safety of carpet. Runners typically need 15-20% less carpet than full-width installation.
