How to Measure Your Stairs for Carpet
Tread Depth
Place tape measure at the nosing edge, measure straight back to where the tread meets the riser. Measure the flat surface only, not the overhang.
Riser Height
Measure the vertical distance from the top of one tread to the top of the next tread. This is the height of the vertical board (riser) between steps.
Stair Width
Measure across the stair from wall to wall (or railing to wall) at the widest point. For open stairs, measure the full tread width including any overhang.
Nosing Overhang
Measure how far the tread edge extends past the riser below it. Look from the side — it’s the protruding lip at the front of each step.
USA Stair Building Standards (IRC 2021)
The International Residential Code sets these minimum requirements for residential stairs in the USA. Our calculator pre-fills these standard values for accuracy.
| Dimension | IRC 2021 Requirement | Common Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum Stair Width | 36 inches | 36 – 42 inches |
| Minimum Tread Depth | 10 inches | 10 – 11 inches |
| Maximum Riser Height | 7.75 inches | 7 – 7.5 inches |
| Nosing Overhang | 0.75 – 1.25 inches | 1 inch |
| Maximum Riser Variation | 3/8 inch (between any two risers) | Consistent throughout |
| Headroom Clearance | 6 feet 8 inches minimum | 7+ feet recommended |
