Calculate Your Vinyl Fence Cost
Vinyl Fence Components Explained
Understanding these parts helps you buy the right materials and communicate with contractors.
5″×5″ vinyl posts set in concrete, placed every 8 feet. Types: Line, Corner, End, and Gate posts.
Pre-assembled 8ft wide sections with rails and pickets. Snap into posts for easy installation.
Horizontal bars (2 for short fences, 3 for 6ft+) that hold pickets and connect to posts.
Decorative tops that protect posts from water intrusion. Styles: Flat, Gothic, Pyramid.
How to Measure Your Fence Line
Follow these 5 steps for accurate measurements. Incorrect measurements are the #1 cause of cost overruns.
Draw a bird’s-eye view showing all fence sides, corners, and gate locations.
Use a 100-ft tape measure. Measure each straight section separately. Write down each number.
Decide gate positions and widths. Walk gates: 3–5 ft. Drive gates: 10–12 ft. Mark on your sketch.
Add every section’s length for total linear feet. Example: 50+30+50+30 = 160 linear feet.
Count each direction change as a corner (rectangle = 4). End points = where fence starts/stops.

Vinyl Fence Cost FAQ
Vinyl fence costs $25 to $55 per linear foot for materials only, and $40 to $85 per linear foot including professional installation. Privacy fences (6ft) are at the higher end ($35–$55/lf materials), while picket and ranch rail styles cost less ($20–$35/lf materials). A typical 150-linear-foot vinyl privacy fence costs $5,250–$8,250 for materials and $6,000–$12,750 installed.
For standard 8-foot panels, you need approximately one post for every 8 feet of fence. A 100-linear-foot fence needs about 13 posts. You also need corner posts at each direction change and end posts where the fence starts and stops. Our calculator above computes the exact number based on your specific layout.
The USA industry standard for vinyl fence panel width is 8 feet (96 inches). Posts are placed 8 feet on center. Some manufacturers offer 6-foot panels for smaller spaces, but 8-foot panels are the most common and cost-effective. All major USA suppliers (Vektek, Bufftech, CertainTeed, Weatherables) use 8-foot panels as their standard.
Vinyl fence posts should be set 24 to 36 inches deep, below your local frost line. Most USA regions use a 30-inch depth. Each post hole should be 10–12 inches in diameter and filled with concrete (typically one 60lb bag per hole). In sandy or loose soil, go deeper or use a wider hole for stability.
In most USA municipalities, a building permit is required for fences exceeding 3–4 feet in the front yard or 6 feet in the backyard. Permit costs range from $20 to $100+. Always check with your local building department and HOA before installation. Failing to get a permit can result in fines and forced removal.
A quality vinyl fence lasts 20 to 30+ years with zero maintenance. Unlike wood, vinyl never rots, warps, splits, or needs painting. UV-resistant additives prevent yellowing and brittleness. Most reputable USA manufacturers offer a lifetime limited warranty on their vinyl fence products.
Yes. While vinyl has a 30–50% higher upfront cost than wood, it becomes cheaper over time. Wood requires staining/painting every 2–3 years ($500–$1,500 per application) and typically needs replacement after 10–15 years. A vinyl fence pays for itself in maintenance savings within 8–12 years and lasts 10–15 years longer than wood.
Expert Tips for Vinyl Fence Installation
Buy 5–10% Extra Material
Always order extra panels and a few spare posts. Damaged pieces during delivery or installation are common. Most suppliers accept returns of unopened materials within 30 days.
Check Underground Utilities
Call 811 (USA national “Call Before You Dig” number) at least 48 hours before digging. It’s free and legally required in most states. They’ll mark gas, water, and electrical lines.
Use Galvanized Steel Inserts
For gates and high-wind areas, insert galvanized steel channels inside vinyl posts before setting in concrete. This dramatically increases strength and prevents post bending.
Follow the Frost Line
In northern USA states (MN, WI, MI, NY, etc.), the frost line can be 36–48 inches deep. Not going below the frost line causes “heaving” — posts push up during freeze/thaw cycles.
Get 3 Contractor Quotes
Always get at least 3 written quotes from licensed fence contractors. Prices can vary 20–40% between contractors. Verify they carry liability insurance and ask for references.
Check HOA Rules First
Many HOAs restrict fence height, color (usually white or tan), style, and placement. Get written approval before purchasing materials. Non-compliant fences may need removal at your expense.
