How to Measure for Quarter Round Molding
Measuring for quarter round (or shoe molding) is straightforward but requires attention to detail. This tool uses the Perimeter Method, which is the standard in the USA.
- Measure the Length: Measure the longest wall in feet and inches.
- Measure the Width: Measure the adjacent wall.
- Calculate Perimeter: Add the Length and Width, then multiply by 2.
- Subtract Openings: Do not put molding against door jambs. Measure the width of your door frames and subtract this from the total.
Why Use a Waste Factor?
When installing quarter round, you must make miter cuts (45-degree angles) at corners. You cannot use the very end of a piece for a cut. A 10% waste factor is standard industry practice to account for these cuts and any minor mistakes during installation.
